Born November 18, 1940 a native of Daphne, lifelong resident, and mayor to the small town he so loved, Bailey Yelding Jr. passed away at his home at the age of 72 on January 22, 2013.
Mayor Yelding was a very faithful man and dedicated member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a trustee and city councilman. A graduate of Baldwin Country Training School, and Alabama State University where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Daphne Alumni Chapter.
Mayor Yelding was an educator, a coach and an administrator. In 2009 he was inducted into the Alabama “Athletic” High School Hall of Fame.
Reverend Charles Jackson, Mayor Yelding’s pastor at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church stated that, “He did not give up. He fought a good fight”, in reference to the cancer that claimed Yelding’s life. “He finished his course.”
From here on, the week of January 22 through the 29th will be known as “Bailey Yelding Week”, proclaimed by City Council President and acting mayor Ron Scott.
He will not be forgotten and his legacy will remain within the hearts and memories of family, friends, church family, fraternal brothers, colleagues, and the citizens of Daphne that he lived his life for.
